About National Renal Care

National Renal Care (NRC) is a leading provider of person-centred kidney care, focused on improving the quality of life for individuals living with compromised kidney function. Their mission extends beyond treatment to empowering patients to manage their care with confidence and independence. NRC partnered with Bitcube to digitise their manual systems and create a more accessible, engaging digital experience. Together, we set out to create a mobile app and content management system that would make renal care more accessible, intuitive, and empowering.

The Challenge

Like many in the medical field, NRC had long relied on manual systems, paper forms, disconnected records, and in-person communication. While this had served them well in the past, it became increasingly difficult to offer patients a consistent and accessible experience, especially as their needs became more varied and complex. Different patients needed different support; some were just learning about kidney disease, others were managing treatment at home, and many relied on regular updates from dialysis centres. Internally, staff struggled with scattered data and manual processes, making it difficult to get a clear view of patient care. The goal was clear: to bring everything together through a mobile app and content management system, giving patients a simple, supportive way to manage their care, and giving staff a connected, centralised database to improve continuity and quality of care.

Our Solution

To bring NRC's vision to life, we started with in-depth UX research to shape a mobile app and content management system tailored to the needs of a diverse patient base. The app, built in Kotlin and Swift, supports patients through every stage of kidney care, from medication and hydration tracking to symptom logging and educational resources. Behind the scenes, we developed a secure backend system that syncs data from multiple sources into a centralised warehouse, ensuring accurate, up-to-date medical records. The CMS allows NRC teams to easily manage and update content, while patients benefit from a supportive, easy-to-use tool that puts them in control of their care.

The NRC app has been downloaded over 5,000 times on Google Play, holding a strong 4.5-star rating, showing it meets patient needs. Whether on personal phones or shared clinic tablets, patients now easily access treatment plans, track fluid intake, and manage lifestyle goals. These improvements support better treatment adherence and healthier habits, leading to an improved quality of life across NRC's patient network.
